Title: Diagrammatic Vector Algebra
Abstract:
Beginning undergraduate students typically derive vector identities by explicitly writing out the vector components. While this method reinforces computational stamina, it is cumbersome and opaque in terms of highlighting the symmetries that underlie these identities. These obstacles are quickly overcome once students learn index notation to manipulate tensors. However, initial encounters with index notation can be confusing and frustrating. I will be presenting a diagrammatic method for manipulating vectors and tensors. The basic principle is the translation of symbols in index notation to diagrams that can be intuitively manipulated to perform computations. Supplementing index notation with this approach can make the learning process easier and provide students with an alternative method to check their computations. While I will only be covering vector algebra in this talk, the diagrammatic method can also be extended to vector calculus.
